Study the following line graph data and answer the questions. The table below shows the annual sales (in ₹ lakhs) of two companies — Company A and Company B — over a period of 6 years from 2018 to 2023.
| Year | Company A (₹ Lakhs) | Company B (₹ Lakhs) |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 120 | 80 |
| 2019 | 150 | 100 |
| 2020 | 180 | 120 |
| 2021 | 240 | 160 |
| 2022 | 300 | 200 |
| 2023 | 360 | 270 |
Note: All values are in ₹ Lakhs.
LINE GRAPHS — COMPLETE EXAM GUIDE FOR SSC CGL ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORE CONCEPT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A line graph shows how a value changes over time. Points are plotted on a grid and connected by straight lines. The X-axis (horizontal) usually shows time — years, months, days. The Y-axis (vertical) shows values — sales, profit, temperature, population, etc. Think of it like a 'journey map' of data. If the line goes UP → the value is increasing. If the line goes DOWN → the value is decreasing. If the line is FLAT → the value is constant.
In SSC CGL, line graphs usually show data for 2 to 3 different categories across 5 to 6 years. You are asked to compare, calculate percentage change, find ratios, or identify the maximum and minimum values. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 1. Always read the UNIT on the Y-axis first. Values may be in thousands, lakhs, or crores. Missing this costs marks. 2.
When two lines are given, the gap between them shows the DIFFERENCE between the two quantities. 3. The STEEPEST slope = highest rate of change. 4. Crossing point of two lines = both values are EQUAL at that year. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Percentage Increase: Answer is positive.
Percentage Decrease: Answer is negative (report as decrease).
Net Percentage Change over multiple years:
Use successive change formula: If change is A% then B%,
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
— WHAT GETS ASKED ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SSC CGL almost always asks these 5 question types from line graphs: 1. Percentage increase or decrease from one year to another. 2. Ratio or fraction between two values in the same year. 3. Average of a quantity over all given years. 4.
In which year was the growth/decline the maximum? 5. Difference or sum of two quantities across specific years. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
For % change questions, use approximation. If exact answer is not needed, round to nearest 5 and eliminate options. For example, 48/320 x 100 ≈ 15%. If only one option is near 15%, mark it directly
If Y-axis unit is 'in thousands', multiply your read value by 1000 only when the question asks for absolute difference or sum. For ratio and percentage questions, the units CANCEL OUT. You can directly use the graph values without multiplying. This saves calculation time. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Old Value = 40 (year 2019)
New Value = 60 (year 2022)
Change = 60 - 40 = 20
% Change = (20 / 40) x 100 = 50% Answer: Sales increased by 50% from 2019 to 2022. Note: Units are in lakhs on both sides — they cancel. No conversion needed here. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 — AVERAGE AND RATIO ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Line graph shows Production of Company A and Company B (in units): Year: 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Company A: 200 300 250 400 350 Company B: 100 150 200 250 300 Question 1: What is the average production of Company A over all 5 years?
Sum = 200 + 300 + 250 + 400 + 350 = 1500
Average = 1500 / 5 = 300 units Answer: 300 units. Question 2: In which year is the ratio of A to B the highest? Ratios: 2018 = 200/100 = 2.0, 2019 = 300/150 = 2.0, 2020 = 250/200 = 1.25, 2021 = 400/250 = 1.6, 2022 = 350/300 = 1.17 Highest ratio = 2.0 (in both 2018 and 2019) Answer: 2018 and 2019 (both have the same highest ratio of 2:1). TIP: Do not calculate all ratios as decimals. Compare fractions directly using cross multiplication to save time. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
— THE NUMBER 1 TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ MOST DANGEROUS MISTAKE: Students confuse 'maximum value' with 'maximum increase'. Example: Sales values are 100, 200, 350, 380. The maximum value is 380 (year 4). But the maximum INCREASE is from year 1 to year 2 (increase of 100), not year 3 to year 4 (increase of only 30). Always re-read the question. 'Highest value' and 'highest growth' are two DIFFERENT things.
This trap appears in nearly every SSC CGL DI set.
