CLOZE TEST — COMPLETE GUIDE FOR SSC CGL ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORE CONCEPT — WHAT IS A CLOZE TEST? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A Cloze Test is a paragraph with 5 to 10 blanks. Each blank has 4 options. You must pick the word that fits the blank correctly — in terms of meaning, grammar, and the overall theme of the passage. Think of it as a 'fill in the blank' test, but for a full paragraph. Every blank depends on the context of the whole passage, not just one sentence. In SSC CGL, Cloze Test carries 5 marks (5 questions from one passage). It tests your vocabulary, grammar sense, and reading comprehension — all at once.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ KEY RULES TO FOLLOW
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Rule 1 — Read the Full Passage First. Never attempt blanks without reading the whole passage once. The theme tells you the tone (positive/negative/neutral).
Rule 2 — Grammar Must Match. The blank must follow grammar rules — singular/plural agreement, tense consistency, preposition usage, and article usage (a/an/the). Rule 3 — Meaning Must Fit. Even if a word is grammatically correct, it must make logical sense in the sentence and the paragraph.
Rule 4 — Elimination Works Best. Cross out 2 clearly wrong options first. Then choose between the remaining 2. Rule 5 — Look at Connector Words. Words like 'however', 'therefore', 'although', 'because' near the blank tell you the direction of the sentence (contrast, cause, result).
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
3-STEP ATTACK METHOD
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Step 2 — GRAMMAR FILTER: Apply grammar rules to remove options that are grammatically wrong
Step 3 — MEANING MATCH: From remaining options, pick the one that fits the meaning best
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
— HOW SSC ASKS CLOZE TEST ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Pattern 1 — Vocabulary-based blanks (synonyms/antonyms tested in context) Pattern 2 — Preposition-based blanks (depend on/consist of/responsible for) Pattern 3 — Conjunction/connector blanks (however, despite, although, therefore) Pattern 4 — Article-based blanks (a/an/the choice) Pattern 5 — Collocations (words that naturally go together, e.g., 'make a decision', not 'do a decision') Most SSC CGL passages are on social issues, nature, history, economy, or motivational themes. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Learn fixed word pairs. Examples — 'take a risk', 'make an effort', 'pay attention', 'come to a conclusion'. If options include wrong collocations, eliminate them instantly
Identify tone in first 2 lines. If passage is positive, blanks will take positive words. If negative, blanks take negative words. This eliminates 1-2 options immediately. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Passage: 'Water is essential for life. Without water, no living being can _____(1)_____. Our planet is _____(2)_____ with water, yet many regions face acute shortage.' Blank 1 Options: (a) survive (b) damage (c) ignore (d) collapse Step 1 — Theme: Importance of water.
Tone: Positive/factual. Step 2 — Grammar: Need a verb. All options are verbs. Grammar does not eliminate here. Step 3 — Meaning: 'Without water, no being can ___.' The sentence says what living beings CANNOT do without water. 'Survive' fits perfectly. 'Damage' and 'ignore' make no sense. 'Collapse' is possible but 'survive' is the natural, standard word used in this context. Answer: (a) survive Blank 2 Options: (a) scarce (b) blessed (c) covered (d) broken Step 1 — Connector: 'yet' after the blank means contrast.
So blank 2 and the next part are opposite in meaning. Step 2 — Next part says 'many regions face shortage' = negative. Step 3 — So blank 2 must be POSITIVE (because 'yet' shows contrast). 'Blessed with water' = positive. This fits perfectly. Answer: (b) blessed ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Passage: 'Education is the most powerful weapon. It _____(1)_____ individuals to think critically and make informed decisions.' Blank 1 Options: (a) prevents (b) enables (c) forces (d) weakens Step 1 — Theme: Power of education.
Tone: Positive. Step 2 — Grammar: Need a verb. Singular subject 'It' — all options match. Step 3 — Meaning + Tone: Passage is positive about education. 'Prevents' = negative block. 'Forces' = negative pressure. 'Weakens' = clearly negative. 'Enables' = positive empowerment. Only 'enables' fits the positive tone. Answer: (b) enables ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ #1 MOST COMMON TRAP — STUDENTS MAKE THIS MISTAKE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ TRAP: Students read only the sentence with the blank — NOT the full passage.
This causes them to pick a word that fits ONE sentence but destroys the meaning of the whole paragraph. Always read the full passage first. The theme of the passage is your biggest clue.
Missing the theme = losing all 5 marks.
