Sentence Improvement— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic
Think of it this way

You are a doctor. The sentence is a patient. Your job is to find what is wrong and fix it — or confirm the patient is healthy. --- KEY RULES / PROPERTIES Rule 1 — Subject-Verb Agreement The verb must match the subject in number (singular/plural)

Example

'The group of students ARE going' is wrong. 'The group of students IS going' is correct. A collective noun like 'group' takes a singular verb. Rule 2 — Tense Consistency Do not mix tenses without reason. If a sentence starts in past tense, it should stay in past tense

Example

'She went to market and buys vegetables' is wrong. Both actions are in the past, so: 'She went to market and bought vegetables.' Rule 3 — Correct Use of Articles (A, An, The) Use 'A' before consonant sounds, 'An' before vowel sounds. Trap: 'An university' is WRONG. 'University' sounds like 'Yoo-niversity' (consonant sound), so: 'A university.' Rule 4 — Preposition Usage Each verb has a fixed preposition partner. Learn common pairs

Example

'Interested IN,' 'Afraid OF,' 'Married TO,' 'Consist OF.' Rule 5 — Correct Pronoun Usage Pronoun must match its antecedent (the noun it refers to) in gender and number

Example

'Everyone must bring their book' — 'their' is now acceptable for 'everyone' in modern grammar. Rule 6 — Correct Degree of Adjective Do not use double comparatives or superlatives. 'More better' is WRONG. 'Better' is already comparative. Use only 'better.' 'Most tallest' is WRONG. Use 'tallest.' Rule 7 — Parallelism Items in a list must have the same grammatical form

Wrong

'She likes singing, to dance, and read.' Right: 'She likes singing, dancing, and reading.' ---

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper

(Memorise These Patterns)

Formula 1 — Collective Noun Rule:

Collective Noun (Army, Team, Committee, Family) + Singular Verb

Exception: When members act individually → Plural Verb

Formula 2 — Double Comparative Rule:

Never use 'more' or 'most' with -er or -est forms.

more + comparative = ERROR | most + superlative = ERROR

Formula 3 — Preposition with 'Married':

Married TO (not 'with') → 'She is married to a doctor.'

Formula 4 — 'Since' vs 'For':

Since = point of time (since 2010, since Monday)
For = period of time (for 5 years, for two hours)

---

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs

— HOW SSC CGL ASKS THIS SSC CGL typically gives 4-5 Sentence Improvement questions per paper. The underlined part is usually: - A verb (testing tense or subject-verb agreement) - A preposition (testing fixed prepositions) - An adjective or adverb (testing degrees of comparison) - An article (A/An/The errors) - A pronoun (testing case or number) ---

ShortcutsUse these to save 30–60 seconds per question
Trick 1 — The 'Sound Test' for Articles

Read the word ALOUD. If it starts with a VOWEL SOUND → An. If CONSONANT SOUND → A. 'An hour' (H is silent, sounds like 'our') — CORRECT. 'A honest man' — WRONG. 'Honest' sounds like 'On-est.' Use 'An honest man.' Trick 2 — Eliminate Obvious Wrongs First: In 4 options, usually 2 are clearly wrong. Focus on the remaining 2 and compare them.

This saves 30-40 seconds per question

Trick 3 — The Parallelism Check

Whenever you see a list in the sentence, check that ALL items end in the same form (-ing, -ed, to+verb, etc.). If one breaks the pattern, that is your error. ---

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1

Identify the issue. 'Since' is used with a point in time. 'Five years' is a PERIOD of time.

2
Step 2

Apply Formula 4. Period of time → use 'FOR.'

3
Step 3

Check all options. Option A says 'for five years.' This is correct.

4
Step 4

Eliminate B ('from' is wrong here) and C ('since five year' is still wrong). Answer: A) for five years WORKED EXAMPLE 2 Sentence: 'The committee have decided to postpone the meeting.' Underlined: 'have decided' Options: A) has decided B) are deciding C) were deciding D) No Improvement

1
Step 1

Identify the subject. Subject = 'The committee' — a collective noun.

2
Step 2

Apply Formula 1. Collective noun acting as one unit → singular verb.

3
Step 3

'have decided' is plural. It should be 'has decided.'

4
Step 4

Option A = 'has decided.' This is correct. Answer: A) has decided ---

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE #1 TRAP Students choose 'No Improvement' too quickly. They read the sentence fast, feel it sounds correct, and pick 'No Improvement' without checking the grammar. This is the most dangerous habit. FIX: Always test subject-verb agreement AND tense consistency before selecting 'No Improvement.' Only pick it after ruling out all errors deliberately.

Key Points to Remember

  • Sentence Improvement tests grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure by replacing the underlined part with the best option.
  • FORMULA: Collective noun (team, army, jury, committee) + singular verb — unless members act individually.
  • FORMULA: Use 'FOR' with a period of time and 'SINCE' with a point in time.
  • FORMULA: Never combine 'more/most' with comparative/superlative forms — 'more better' and 'most tallest' are always wrong.
  • The 'Sound Test' — judge articles (A/An) by the SOUND of the next word, not the spelling. 'An hour', 'A university.'
  • SHORTCUT: Eliminate 2 obviously wrong options first, then compare the remaining 2 to save time.
  • Parallelism rule — all items in a list must follow the same grammatical form (-ing, to+verb, etc.).
  • Fixed preposition pairs to memorise: Married TO, Afraid OF, Interested IN, Consist OF, Agree WITH.
  • Tense consistency — do not switch tenses within a sentence without a logical reason.
  • TRAP: Never pick 'No Improvement' quickly — always verify subject-verb agreement and tense before choosing it.

Exam-Specific Tips

  • SSC CGL typically includes 4-5 Sentence Improvement questions per English section paper.
  • Collective nouns such as 'jury', 'committee', 'army', 'team', and 'family' take a singular verb when acting as one unit.
  • 'Since' is used with a point in time (since 2010, since Monday); 'For' is used with a duration (for 3 years, for two hours).
  • The word 'university' begins with a consonant sound ('Yoo'), so the correct article is 'A university', NOT 'An university.'
  • The word 'hour' begins with a vowel sound ('ow'), so the correct article is 'An hour', NOT 'A hour.'
  • Double comparative error example: 'More better' is incorrect — 'better' is already comparative; correct form is simply 'better.'
  • Fixed preposition rule: 'Married' is always followed by 'to', never 'with' — 'She is married to a doctor' is correct.
  • Parallelism error example: 'She likes singing, to dance, and read' — correct form is 'singing, dancing, and reading' (all -ing forms).

60-Second Revision — Sentence Improvement

  • Remember: Collective noun (team, committee, jury) = singular verb. 'The team HAS won', not 'have won.'
  • Formula: FOR = period of time (for 5 years) | SINCE = point of time (since 2019). Mixing these is a top SSC trap.
  • Trick: Read the next word ALOUD to choose A or An — it is about SOUND, not spelling. 'An honest man', 'A European country.'
  • Formula: Never use 'more' with -er or 'most' with -est. 'More taller' and 'most fastest' are always wrong answers.
  • Trap: Do NOT pick 'No Improvement' without first checking subject-verb agreement AND tense — this is the #1 student mistake.
  • Remember fixed preposition pairs: Married TO, Consist OF, Afraid OF, Interested IN, Differ FROM.
  • Shortcut: Eliminate 2 clearly wrong options first, then compare remaining 2 carefully — saves time and improves accuracy.
