ShortcutsUse these to save 30–60 seconds per question

Trick 1 — Eliminate by Grammar First Before checking meaning, eliminate options that are grammatically wrong. If subject is singular, eliminate plural verb options first. Trick 2 — Plug and Read Aloud Plug each option into the blank and read the full sentence silently. The option that sounds natural and complete is your answer. Trick 3 — Context Clue Method Look at words BEFORE and AFTER the blank. They give clues. If you see 'but', expect a contrast word in the blank. If you see 'because', expect a reason word or clause. ---

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE #1 TRAP Students confuse FOR and SINCE. They write: 'She has lived here since five years.' ← WRONG Correct: 'She has lived here FOR five years.' (duration = FOR) Correct: 'She has lived here SINCE 2018.' (point in time = SINCE) This one mistake costs marks in almost every exam. Memorise: SINCE = point, FOR = period. Never swap them.

  • Fill in the Blanks tests grammar + meaning together — both must be correct for the right answer.
  • Formula: SINCE = point in time (2015, Monday, childhood); FOR = duration (5 years, two months).
  • Subject-Verb Agreement: Verb must always match the nearest subject in Neither...Nor and Either...Or structures.

Exam-Specific Tips

  • SINCE is used with Present Perfect tense and marks a specific point in time (e.g., since 1990, since Monday).
  • FOR is used with Present Perfect tense and marks a duration of time (e.g., for three years, for two months).
  • In Either...Or and Neither...Nor sentences, the verb agrees with the subject CLOSEST to it — not the first subject.
  • 'An' is used before words with a vowel SOUND — 'an honest man' and 'an hour' are correct because H is silent.
  • 'A' is used before words with a consonant SOUND — 'a university' and 'a European' are correct despite starting with vowels.
  • Collective nouns (team, jury, committee, army) take a singular verb in formal/standard English usage tested in SSC.
  • The preposition after 'Interested' is always IN — 'interested in music' — a direct MCQ target in SSC CGL.
  • Cloze Test passages in SSC CGL typically carry 5 to 10 blanks and test vocabulary, prepositions, and tense together.
