CORE CONCEPT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

A line graph shows how a value changes over time. Points are plotted on a grid and connected by straight lines. The X-axis (horizontal) usually shows time — years, months, days. The Y-axis (vertical) shows values — sales, profit, temperature, population, etc. Think of it like a 'journey map' of data. If the line goes UP → the value is increasing. If the line goes DOWN → the value is decreasing. If the line is FLAT → the value is constant.

In SSC CGL, line graphs usually show data for 2 to 3 different categories across 5 to 6 years. You are asked to compare, calculate percentage change, find ratios, or identify the maximum and minimum values. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

TRICK 2 — APPROXIMATE AND ELIMINATE

For % change questions, use approximation. If exact answer is not needed, round to nearest 5 and eliminate options. For example, 48/320 x 100 ≈ 15%. If only one option is near 15%, mark it directly

TRICK 3 — UNIT SCALING TRICK

If Y-axis unit is 'in thousands', multiply your read value by 1000 only when the question asks for absolute difference or sum. For ratio and percentage questions, the units CANCEL OUT. You can directly use the graph values without multiplying. This saves calculation time. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE NUMBER 1 TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ MOST DANGEROUS MISTAKE: Students confuse 'maximum value' with 'maximum increase'. Example: Sales values are 100, 200, 350, 380. The maximum value is 380 (year 4). But the maximum INCREASE is from year 1 to year 2 (increase of 100), not year 3 to year 4 (increase of only 30). Always re-read the question. 'Highest value' and 'highest growth' are two DIFFERENT things.

This trap appears in nearly every SSC CGL DI set.

  • A line graph plots values (Y-axis) against time or categories (X-axis) connected by straight lines.
  • Upward slope = increase, Downward slope = decrease, Flat line = no change in value.

  • In SSC CGL Data Interpretation, line graphs appear in almost every Tier-1 paper, typically as a set of 4-5 questions worth 8-10 marks.
  • The most frequently tested calculation in line graph DI is Percentage Change: formula = [(New - Old) / Old] x 100.
  • When a line graph shows two lines crossing each other, the values of both quantities are exactly equal at that intersection point — this is a direct MCQ trap.
  • If Y-axis shows values 'in thousands' and the question asks for a ratio, no multiplication by 1000 is needed because the unit cancels in the ratio.
  • The successive percentage change formula for two consecutive changes of A% and B% is: Net % = A + B + (AB/100).
