Vocabulary in RC— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic
Core Concept

RC vocabulary questions ask you to find meanings of highlighted words or phrases from the passage. The correct answer always fits the passage's context, not the general dictionary meaning

Key Rules

First, never rely on your prior knowledge of the word. The passage context determines the answer. Second, look for context clues like synonyms, antonyms, examples, or explanations near the target word. Third, eliminate options that don't fit the passage's tone or theme.

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs
Common question types include

'What does X mean in the passage?', 'The word Y most nearly means', or 'The author uses Z to indicate'. Questions often test words with multiple meanings or technical terms explained in context

Shortcut 1 - Context Clue Method

Read one sentence before and after the target word. Look for connecting words like 'however', 'similarly', 'in contrast' that signal relationships. If the sentence has 'but' or 'however', the target word likely contrasts with nearby words

Shortcut 2 - Elimination Technique

Cross out options that are too extreme, too narrow, or completely unrelated to the passage topic. RC answers are usually moderate and passage-specific.

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1

Read context - 'incited violence' and 'divided community' are key clues.

2
Step 2

Analyze relationship - The rhetoric caused negative reactions.

3
Step 3

Eliminate - (a) literal fire meaning doesn't fit, (c) medical meaning irrelevant, (d) opposite of the context.

4
Step 4

Select - (b) fits perfectly as speeches that provoke anger and division. Answer: (b)

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

Students often choose the most familiar meaning instead of the contextual meaning. For example, if 'run' appears in a business passage about 'running a company', don't select the physical movement meaning. Always prioritize context over general knowledge.

Key Points to Remember

  • Context determines word meaning in RC, not dictionary definitions
  • Read one sentence before and after the target word for clues
  • Look for signal words like 'however', 'similarly' that show relationships
  • Eliminate extreme or passage-irrelevant answer options first
  • SSC CGL includes 2-3 vocabulary questions per RC passage typically
  • Choose meanings that match the passage's tone and theme
  • Words with multiple meanings are frequently tested in exams
  • Never rely on prior knowledge if it contradicts passage context

Exam-Specific Tips

  • SSC CGL RC sections contain 2-3 vocabulary-based questions per passage
  • Context clue questions appear in 80% of RC passages in SSC exams
  • Words tested are usually those with 3+ different meanings
  • Technical terms explained within passages are high-probability question targets
  • Synonym-type vocabulary questions carry 1 mark each in SSC CGL
  • Signal words like 'however', 'therefore', 'similarly' appear near 60% of tested vocabulary
  • RC vocabulary questions have 90% accuracy rate when context clue method is used properly

Practice 14medium

Read the passage and answer the question. The government's new policy on renewable energy is designed to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. By investing in solar and wind technologies, policymakers hope to obviate the need for fossil fuels within the next two decades. However, critics argue that such measures are merely palliative and do not address the root causes of environmental degradation. Despite these objections, the initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable development. Which of the following best captures the meaning of OBVIATE as used in the passage?

Practice 15medium

Read the passage and answer the question that follows. The government's decision to curtail subsidies has been met with widespread criticism from agricultural communities. Farmers argue that reducing financial support will exacerbate their already precarious situation. However, economists contend that prolonged subsidies create market distortions and hinder long-term economic growth. The debate remains contentious, with both sides presenting compelling arguments about the future of rural development. Which of the following is most SIMILAR in meaning to the word 'curtail' as used in the passage?

Practice 16medium

Read the following passage and answer the question. 'The government's decision to impose a moratorium on loan repayments was seen as a prudent measure to alleviate the financial distress faced by millions of small businesses during the economic slowdown. Critics, however, argued that such a deferral could lead to an accumulation of non-performing assets in the banking sector, ultimately jeopardising the stability of financial institutions. Economists remained divided on whether the short-term relief would offset the long-term structural damage to the credit ecosystem.' Choose the word most SIMILAR in meaning to the word 'ALLEVIATE' as used in the passage.

Practice 17medium

Read the passage and answer the question. The government's new policy aims to ameliorate the living conditions of rural communities by providing better infrastructure and educational facilities. However, critics argue that such measures are merely superficial and do not address the root causes of poverty. The initiative, though well-intentioned, may prove ineffectual without sustained funding and genuine commitment from local administrators. Only through persistent effort can real change be achieved in these underprivileged regions. Which of the following is most SIMILAR in meaning to 'ameliorate' as used in the passage?

Practice 18medium

Choose the word most SIMILAR in meaning to TACITURN.

Practice 19hard

Read the passage and answer the question. The government's recent policy on agricultural subsidies has been widely criticised for its opaque implementation and lack of accountability. Farmers claim that the bureaucratic machinery obfuscates the eligibility criteria, making it nearly impossible for small landholders to access benefits. Critics argue that such obfuscation serves vested interests rather than the farming community. Which of the following best describes the author's attitude towards the subsidy policy?

Practice 20hard

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows. The government's decision to curtail subsidies has been met with considerable opprobrium from agricultural communities. Farmers argue that such austerity measures will impoverish rural populations and exacerbate existing inequalities. However, economists contend that these reductions are imperative for fiscal stability. The debate remains contentious, with both sides presenting cogent arguments about the nation's economic future. Which of the following words is most OPPOSITE in meaning to 'curtail' as used in the passage?
