SIMPLE INTEREST — COMPLETE EXAM GUIDE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORE CONCEPT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Simple Interest (SI) is the interest calculated ONLY on the original amount (called Principal). It does not change year to year. The interest earned each year stays the same. Think of it like this: if you lend Rs. 1000 at 10% per year, you earn Rs. 100 every single year — no more, no less. This is different from Compound Interest where interest is added to the principal each year. In Simple Interest, the base amount never changes.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ KEY RULES / PROPERTIES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 1. Interest is always calculated on the ORIGINAL principal, not on accumulated interest.
2. SI grows in a straight line — it is linear growth. 3. Rate is always per annum (per year) unless stated otherwise.
4. Time must be in YEARS. If given in months, divide by 12. If in days, divide by 365. 5. Amount = Principal + Simple Interest.

Derived formulas (very useful in exams):
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
If SI = (x/y) of Principal, then R × T = (x/y) × 100 Example: If SI = 3/5 of P, then R × T = 60. If T = 6, then R = 10%
A sum S is split into two parts at rates R1 and R2 for the same time T. Part 1 = S × (Total SI - S × R2 × T/100) ÷ [(R1 - R2) × T/100] Or use alligation on the effective rates to find the ratio of parts. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Write down values. P = 4500, R = 8, T = 3
Apply formula. SI = (P × R × T) / 100 SI = (4500 × 8 × 3) / 100 SI = 108000 / 100 SI = Rs. 1080
Find Amount. A = P + SI = 4500 + 1080 = Rs. 5580 Answer: SI = Rs. 1080, Amount = Rs. 5580 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 — Find Rate (Trick-Based) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: A sum of money doubles itself in 12 years under Simple Interest. Find the rate of interest per annum.
Money doubles means SI = P (interest earned equals the original amount).
Use the doubling trick. R × T = 100 R × 12 = 100 R = 100/12 R = 8.33% = 8 and 1/3 % Answer: Rate = 8.33% per annum No heavy calculation needed. Just remember: R × T = 100 for doubling. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
— THE #1 TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ STUDENTS CONFUSE AMOUNT WITH INTEREST. The question asks for Simple Interest but students calculate Amount (P + SI) and mark that as the answer. OR the question gives Amount and asks to find Principal — students forget to subtract the interest first. Always re-read the question: Does it ask for SI or for the total Amount? These are two different things.
This single mistake costs marks in almost every exam.
