BOATS & STREAMS — COMPLETE GUIDE FOR SSC CGL ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORE CONCEPT — WHAT IS IT? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Imagine a boat moving on a river. The river has its own current (flow of water). When the boat moves in the same direction as the river, the water helps it go faster. When the boat moves against the river, the water slows it down. This is the entire concept of Boats and Streams. It is just a real-life version of relative speed.
Three things you must know: • Speed of Boat in Still Water (B) — how fast the boat moves if there is no current at all.
• Speed of Stream/Current (S) — how fast the river water flows. • Upstream / Downstream — the two directions of travel.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ • DOWNSTREAM means the boat moves WITH the current. Water helps. Speed increases. • UPSTREAM means the boat moves AGAINST the current. Water resists.
Speed decreases. • Still Water means no current at all. Stream speed = 0. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

— WHAT GETS ASKED ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SSC CGL asks 1 to 2 questions from this topic almost every year. Common question types: • Find upstream or downstream speed given boat and stream speed. • Find time to travel a given distance upstream or downstream. • Find speed of boat or stream when upstream/downstream speeds are given. • Find total time for a round trip (upstream + downstream). • Find distance when time difference between upstream and downstream is given. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Total time for round trip over distance 'd' = d/(B+S) + d/(B-S) Simplified: Total time = 2 x d x B / (B^2 - S^2) Use this when question asks total time for going and coming back
If a boat takes 't' hours more to go upstream than downstream over same distance 'd': d x 2S = t x (B^2 - S^2) Use this to find distance or speed when time difference is given. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Find downstream speed. Downstream speed = Distance / Time = 12 / 2 = 6 km/h
Find upstream speed. Upstream speed = 8 / 4 = 2 km/h
Apply formula. Speed of Boat = (6 + 2) / 2 = 8 / 2 = 4 km/h Speed of Stream = (6 - 2) / 2 = 4 / 2 = 2 km/h Answer: Boat speed = 4 km/h, Stream speed = 2 km/h ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 — Medium Level (Round Trip) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: A boat travels 30 km upstream and 30 km downstream. Speed of boat in still water is 10 km/h and stream speed is 2 km/h. Find total time taken.
Find upstream speed. Upstream = 10 - 2 = 8 km/h
Find downstream speed. Downstream = 10 + 2 = 12 km/h
Find time for each leg. Time upstream = 30 / 8 = 3.75 hours Time downstream = 30 / 12 = 2.5 hours
Total time = 3.75 + 2.5 = 6.25 hours = 6 hours 15 minutes Answer: 6 hours 15 minutes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
— NUMBER 1 TRAP IN EXAM ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Most students confuse UPSTREAM and DOWNSTREAM speed with BOAT speed and STREAM speed. They directly use the upstream speed as the stream speed or vice versa. Remember: Upstream and downstream are COMBINED speeds (boat plus or minus stream). You MUST apply the average formulas to separate them.
Never treat D or U directly as boat speed or stream speed. This single mistake causes wrong answers in at least 40% of students.
