Blood Relations— Rules & Concept

BLOOD RELATIONS — COMPLETE GUIDE FOR SSC CGL ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

CORE CONCEPT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Blood Relations questions test your ability to find the relationship between two people based on given clues. You are given a chain of relations and asked to find what Person A is to Person B. The key skill is reading carefully and drawing a family tree. Think of it like building a family chart step by step. Every clue adds one more person to your chart.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ KEY RULES TO REMEMBER

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Rule 1 — Always identify GENDER first. Words like son, father, brother, husband = MALE. Daughter, mother, sister, wife = FEMALE.

Rule 2 — Draw a diagram. Never try to solve in your head. A simple box-and-line chart saves time and prevents errors. Rule 3 — Watch for phrases like 'only child', 'only son', 'only daughter'. These limit how many siblings exist.

Rule 4 — Generation levels matter. Parents are one generation above. Grandparents are two generations above. Children are one below. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

CRITICAL RELATION TABLE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Father's or Mother's Father = Grandfather Father's or Mother's Mother = Grandmother

Father's or Mother's Brother = Uncle Father's or Mother's Sister = Aunt

Father's or Mother's Son = Brother or self Father's or Mother's Daughter = Sister or self

Son's Wife = Daughter-in-law Daughter's Husband = Son-in-law

Husband's or Wife's Brother = Brother-in-law Husband's or Wife's Sister = Sister-in-law

Brother's Son = Nephew Brother's Daughter = Niece

Sister's Son = Nephew Sister's Daughter = Niece

Uncle's or Aunt's Son or Daughter = Cousin ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs

— WHAT GETS ASKED ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Type 1 — Single Statement: 'A is the brother of B. B is the mother of C. How is A related to C?' (Most common type) Type 2 — Coded Relations: '+' means brother, '-' means sister, etc. Decode first, then solve. Type 3 — Pointing/Photo Questions: 'Pointing to a photo, a man says, the person in the photo is the son of my father's only son.' (Tricky — needs careful reading) Type 4 — Puzzle Based: A group of people with multiple relations given together.

Draw a full family tree. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

ShortcutsUse these to save 30–60 seconds per question
Formula

Father's only son = Me. Mother's only daughter = Me

TRICK 2 — Gender Elimination

If the answer is Male, eliminate all female options instantly. If Female, eliminate all male options. This alone removes 2 wrong options in seconds

TRICK 3 — Generation Counting

Count how many steps UP or DOWN the family tree you travel. Two steps up = Grandparent level. Two steps down = Grandchild level. Same level = Sibling or Cousin

Formula

Same generation + same parents = Sibling. Same generation + different parents = Cousin. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on

— SINGLE CHAIN ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: A is the son of B. C is the daughter of A. D is the husband of B.

How is C related to D? Step 1 — Build the chain: B is a female (has a son A and a husband D). D is male (husband of B). A is male (son of B). C is female (daughter of A). Step 2 — Draw the tree: D married B → their son is A → A's daughter is C. Step 3 — Find relation: D is B's husband. B is A's mother. So D is A's father.

A's daughter is C. So D is C's GRANDFATHER. Answer: C is D's Granddaughter. OR D is C's Grandfather. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 — PHOTO/POINTING TYPE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: Pointing to a photograph, Ravi says, 'She is the daughter of my grandfather's only son.' How is the girl in the photo related to Ravi? Step 1 — Decode 'my grandfather's only son': Grandfather's only son = Ravi's Father (since Ravi is male and father is the only son). Step 2 — 'Daughter of my father' = Ravi's Sister. Step 3 — Confirm gender: The girl is female.

Sister is female. Correct. Answer: The girl is Ravi's Sister. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NUMBER 1

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE GENDER TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Students assume gender without reading carefully. Names like 'Kiran', 'Renu', 'Jai' can be misleading. NEVER assume gender from a name.

Only assign gender when the question uses clear words like son, daughter, husband, wife, brother, sister, mother, or father. This one mistake causes most wrong answers in Blood Relations.

Key Points to Remember

  • Always draw a family tree diagram — never solve blood relation questions in your head.
  • Identify gender first using keywords: son/father/brother/husband = Male; daughter/mother/sister/wife = Female.
  • SHORTCUT: 'My father's only son' always means MYSELF. 'My mother's only daughter' always means MYSELF.
  • FORMULA: Same generation + same parents = Sibling. Same generation + different parents = Cousin.
  • FORMULA: Two steps UP the family tree = Grandparent level. Two steps DOWN = Grandchild level.
  • Brother's or Sister's son = Nephew. Brother's or Sister's daughter = Niece. Remember both under one rule.
  • Uncle or Aunt's child (son or daughter) is always your Cousin — not brother or sister.
  • SHORTCUT: Use gender elimination — if the answer must be male, delete all female options instantly to save time.
  • In coded relation questions, always decode the symbols into actual relationships before building the tree.
  • TRAP: Never assign gender based on a person's name — only use words like son, daughter, husband, wife to confirm gender.

Exam-Specific Tips

  • Father's brother is called Uncle and his wife is called Aunt — both are one generation above the reference person.
  • Son's wife = Daughter-in-law. Daughter's husband = Son-in-law. These are the two most tested in-law relations in SSC exams.
  • Nephew = Son of your Brother or Sister. Niece = Daughter of your Brother or Sister.
  • In SSC CGL, Blood Relations questions typically carry 3 to 5 marks per paper and appear in Tier 1 General Intelligence section.
  • The phrase 'grandfather's only son' in a question usually points directly to the speaker's own Father — tested repeatedly in SSC and Railways exams.
  • Husband's brother = Brother-in-law. Wife's sister = Sister-in-law. Spouse's siblings share the same in-law title pattern.
  • In puzzle-type blood relation questions, the minimum number of people in the family described is always equal to the number of unique names given in the question.

60-Second Revision — Blood Relations

  • Remember: Draw the family tree FIRST — even 10 seconds spent drawing saves 30 seconds of confusion.
  • Formula: Father's only son = ME. Grandfather's only son = My Father. Apply this instantly to photo/pointing questions.
  • Formula: Same generation + same parents = Sibling. Different parents, same generation = Cousin.
  • Trap: NEVER guess gender from names like Kiran or Renu — only confirm gender from words like son, daughter, husband, wife.
  • Shortcut: Use gender elimination as your first filter — wrong gender options can be removed in under 5 seconds.
  • Remember: Nephew and Niece are always one generation BELOW you — children of your siblings, not your parents' siblings.
  • Trick: In coded relation questions, decode ALL symbols into words before drawing — never mix codes and words in the same diagram.
