Pie Charts— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic

CORE CONCEPT — WHAT IS A PIE CHART? A pie chart is a circle divided into slices. Each slice shows the share of one category out of the total. The full circle = 360 degrees = 100%. In SSC CGL, pie charts come with data in degrees OR percentages. Your job is to find values, differences, ratios, and percentages from the chart.

Key RulesCore rules you must know cold
1

The total of all slices = 360 degrees (always).

2

The total of all percentages = 100% (always).

3

Each degree = 1/360 of the total value.

4

Each percent = 1/100 of the total value.

5

If a slice is given in degrees, convert to percentage: Percentage = (Degree / 360) x 100.

6

If a slice is given in percentage, convert to degrees: Degree = (Percentage / 100) x 360.

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper
Value of a category = (Percentage / 100) x Total
Value of a category = (Degree / 360) x Total
Percentage of a category = (Degree / 360) x 100
Degree of a category = (Percentage / 100) x 360
Ratio of two categories = Ratio of their degrees OR percentages (they are directly proportional)
Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs
Common question types are

- Find the value of one category (given total). - Find the difference between two categories. - Find the ratio of two categories. - Find what percentage one category is of another category. - Compare two pie charts (e.g., production vs export). - Find the percentage increase or decrease from one chart to another. SHORTCUTS AND TRICKS Trick 1 — Direct Ratio Shortcut: Never convert degrees to values just to find a ratio. The ratio of two categories equals the ratio of their degrees or percentages directly

Example

If category A = 72 degrees and category B = 108 degrees, ratio = 72:108 = 2:3. No need for total

Trick 2 — Percentage of Percentage Formula

If a question asks what percentage is Category A of Category B: Answer = (Percentage of A / Percentage of B) x 100 Example: A = 25%, B = 40%. Answer = (25/40) x 100 = 62.5% Trick 3 — Two Pie Chart Comparison: When two pie charts show data for two years with different totals, DO NOT compare percentages directly. Always calculate actual values first using (Percentage / 100) x Total.

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1

Combined percentage = 30 + 25 = 55%

2
Step 2

Amount = (55 / 100) x 50,000 = Rs 27,500 Answer: Rs 27,500 Question: What is the ratio of Education to Others?

1
Step 1

Education = 20%, Others = 10%

2
Step 2

Ratio = 20:10 = 2:1 (Use Trick 1 — no calculation needed) Answer: 2:1 WORKED EXAMPLE 2 A pie chart shows production of a factory in degrees. Total production = 7200 units. Product A = 90 degrees, Product B = 120 degrees, Product C = 150 degrees. Question: How many units of Product B were produced?

1
Step 1

Value = (Degree / 360) x Total

2
Step 2

Value = (120 / 360) x 7200 = (1/3) x 7200 = 2400 units Answer: 2400 units Question: What percentage of total production is Product A?

1
Step 1

Percentage = (90 / 360) x 100 = 25% Answer: 25%

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE NUMBER 1 TRAP Students compare percentages across two different pie charts when the totals are different. This is WRONG. Example: In Year 1, Exports = 40% of total production 10,000 = 4,000 units. In Year 2, Exports = 35% of total production 15,000 = 5,250 units.

Even though the percentage went DOWN, the actual value went UP. Always calculate actual values when totals differ. This trap appears in almost every SSC CGL paper.

Key Points to Remember

  • A pie chart is a circle where all slices together equal 360 degrees or 100%.
  • Formula: Value of a category = (Percentage / 100) x Total.
  • Formula: Value of a category = (Degree / 360) x Total.
  • Formula: Convert degree to percentage = (Degree / 360) x 100.
  • Shortcut: Ratio of two categories = ratio of their degrees or percentages directly — no need to find actual values.
  • Shortcut: Percentage of A with respect to B = (% of A / % of B) x 100.
  • Never compare percentages across two pie charts if their totals are different — always find actual values first.
  • If total degrees of all slices do not add up to 360, recheck — it is always 360 degrees.
  • In SSC CGL, pie chart questions usually appear in sets of 4 to 5 questions based on one or two charts.
  • Shortcut: When degree is a multiple of 9, its percentage is a multiple of 2.5 — use this to cross-check answers fast.

Exam-Specific Tips

  • A full pie chart always represents 360 degrees and 100% — these two values are fixed and non-negotiable.
  • 1 degree in a pie chart = (1/360) x Total value of the data.
  • 1% in a pie chart = (1/100) x Total value of the data.
  • To convert percentage to degrees: multiply the percentage by 3.6 (since 360/100 = 3.6).
  • To convert degrees to percentage: divide the degree value by 3.6.
  • SSC CGL Tier 1 typically has 1 set of Data Interpretation carrying 4 to 5 marks, and pie charts are one of the most frequently tested DI types.
  • If two categories together form 180 degrees, they represent exactly 50% of the total — a direct half of the pie.
  • The ratio of any two slices in a pie chart is the same whether measured in degrees or percentages — both give identical ratios.

60-Second Revision — Pie Charts

  • Formula: Value = (% / 100) x Total OR Value = (Degree / 360) x Total — memorise both forms.
  • Shortcut: To find ratio of two categories, just use ratio of their percentages or degrees directly — skip calculating actual values.
  • Shortcut: % of A relative to B = (% A / % B) x 100 — use when question asks one category as percentage of another.
  • Trap: NEVER compare percentages from two pie charts with different totals — always compute actual values before comparing.
  • Remember: 360 degrees = 100% always — if a slice is 90 degrees, it is always 25% regardless of total.
  • Convert tip: Multiply percentage by 3.6 to get degrees. Divide degrees by 3.6 to get percentage.
  • In exam: Read the total value carefully — it is given in the question or chart heading. Missing it is the most common error.
