Happy → Glad, Joyful, Elated An ANTONYM is a word that means the OPPOSITE of another word
Happy → Sad, Miserable, Gloomy Think of it this way: Synonym = Same Side | Antonym = Opposite Side In SSC CGL, 4 to 6 questions appear from Synonyms and Antonyms EVERY paper. This topic is pure vocabulary. You either know the word or you do not. But with smart tricks, you can crack even unknown words. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Rule 1 — Context Matters: A word can have different synonyms in different sentences. 'Cool' can mean 'cold' (temperature) or 'calm' (behaviour). Always read the sentence carefully. Rule 2 — Near Synonyms Are Not Always Perfect Synonyms: 'Famous' and 'Notorious' both mean well-known, but 'Notorious' has a negative meaning. SSC loves to test this difference. Rule 3 — Prefix and Suffix Trick: Many antonyms are formed by adding a prefix. UN + Happy = Unhappy IN + Correct = Incorrect DIS + Honest = Dishonest IM + Possible = Impossible IR + Regular = Irregular Rule 4 — Word Roots Help You Guess: If you know Latin and Greek roots, you can guess meanings of unfamiliar words. BENE = Good (Benevolent = kind) MAL = Bad (Malevolent = cruel) PHIL = Love (Philanthropy = love of mankind) MIS = Hate (Misanthrope = hates people) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
SHORTCUT 1 — THE POSITIVE/NEGATIVE TEST:
Step 1: Decide if the given word is POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, or NEUTRAL in meaning.
Step 2: For SYNONYM — the answer must carry the SAME tone.
Step 3: For ANTONYM — the answer must carry the OPPOSITE tone.
This alone eliminates 2 wrong options immediately.
SHORTCUT 2 — ROOT WORD ATTACK:
Break the word into PREFIX + ROOT + SUFFIX.
SHORTCUT 3 — ELIMINATION BY INTENSITY:
SSC often gives options that are close but differ in intensity.
If the given word is EXTREME in tone, pick the most intense synonym.
If MILD, pick the softer option.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SSC CGL asks synonyms and antonyms in two ways: Type 1 — Direct: 'Choose the synonym of LOQUACIOUS' Type 2 — Sentence Based: 'Choose the word most similar in meaning to the underlined word in the sentence.' Type 2 is trickier because the sentence gives context clues. ALWAYS use those clues. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Break the word. LOQU = Latin root meaning 'to speak' (also seen in Eloquent, Soliloquy).
LOQUACIOUS = someone who speaks a lot = Talkative.
Apply Positive/Negative Test. 'Talkative' is the same neutral-to-positive tone. 'Silent' is the opposite.
Eliminate. (A) Silent — ANTONYM, not synonym. (C) Lazy — unrelated. (D) Brave — unrelated. Answer: (B) Talkative ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 — ANTONYM ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: Choose the antonym of BENEVOLENT. (A) Generous (B) Malevolent (C) Humble (D) Joyful
BENE = Good. BENEVOLENT = wishing good = Kind, Generous.
Antonym = opposite = Wishing BAD for others.
MAL = Bad. MALEVOLENT = wishing harm = opposite of Benevolent.
Check other options. (A) Generous = SYNONYM, trap option! (C) Humble = unrelated. (D) Joyful = unrelated. Answer: (B) Malevolent ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NUMBER 1 COMMON TRAP — THE SYNONYM TRAP IN ANTONYM QUESTIONS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SSC CGL ALWAYS places a synonym of the given word as one of the answer options in an ANTONYM question. Students who are excited see a familiar word and pick it — and it is WRONG. Example: Antonym of BENEVOLENT — Option (A) is Generous, which is a SYNONYM. Always re-read the question: Is it asking SAME meaning or OPPOSITE meaning? This one mistake costs thousands of students marks every single exam.
