Financial Inclusion & Schemes— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic

FINANCIAL INCLUSION & SCHEMES — BANKING AWARENESS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

CORE CONCEPT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Financial Inclusion means giving every person access to useful and affordable financial services. This includes bank accounts, loans, insurance, and pension. The goal is to bring poor and rural people into the formal banking system. In simple words — no person should be left without a bank account or financial safety net. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the main body that pushes financial inclusion in India. The Government of India also runs many schemes to achieve this goal.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Key RulesCore rules you must know cold
Key features

— Zero balance account — RuPay Debit Card with accident insurance of Rs. 2 lakh (enhanced from Rs. 1 lakh) — Overdraft facility up to Rs. 10,000 (earlier Rs. 5,000) — Life cover of Rs. 30,000 — No minimum balance required 2. PMJJBY (Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana): Life insurance scheme. Premium = Rs. 436 per year (revised from Rs. 330). Coverage = Rs. 2 lakh on death.

Age group = 18 to 50 years. 3. PMSBY (Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana): Accident insurance scheme. Premium = Rs. 20 per year. Coverage = Rs. 2 lakh (full disability/death), Rs. 1 lakh (partial disability).

Age group = 18 to 70 years. 4. APY (Atal Pension Yojana): Pension scheme for unorganised sector workers. Age = 18 to 40 years. Minimum pension = Rs. 1,000/month.

Maximum pension = Rs. 5,000/month. Administered by PFRDA. 5. PMMY (Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana): Loans for small businesses

Three categories

— Shishu: Loans up to Rs. 50,000 — Kishore: Loans from Rs. 50,001 to Rs. 5 lakh — Tarun: Loans from Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh MUDRA = Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency 6

Stand-Up India Scheme

Loans between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 1 crore for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs. At least one beneficiary from each bank branch. 7. BC Model (Business Correspondent): Banks appoint agents in remote areas. These agents act as mini banks.

They help open accounts, accept deposits, and disburse loans. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Shortcut Formula 1 — PMSBY Premium Trick:

Premium per day = Rs. 20 / 365 = less than 6 paise per day
Exams often ask: 'Which scheme gives maximum coverage at lowest cost?' Answer = PMSBY (Rs. 20 premium, Rs. 2 lakh cover)

Shortcut Formula 2 — MUDRA Loan Limit Rule:

Shishu limit x 10 = Tarun limit (50,000 x 10 = 5,00,000... then Tarun = upto 10 lakh)
Remember: S-K-T = Small to Tall (Shishu, Kishore, Tarun)

Shortcut Formula 3 — APY Pension Memory Trick:

Age entry range = 18 to 40 years → contribution period minimum = 20 years (40 - 20 = 20)
Pension range = Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month (5 slabs)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Exams frequently ask: — Launch dates of schemes — Premium amounts and coverage amounts — Age eligibility for each scheme — Which body administers each scheme — MUDRA loan categories and limits — Overdraft limit under PMJDY — RuPay card insurance cover amount ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1

PMJDY gives a RuPay Debit Card to every account holder.

2
Step 2

The RuPay card comes with built-in accident insurance.

3
Step 3

The accident insurance cover under PMJDY (for new accounts opened after 28 Aug 2018) = Rs. 2 lakh. Answer: Rs. 2 lakh Trap here: Many students write Rs. 1 lakh. That was the OLD limit. New limit = Rs. 2 lakh. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: A 35-year-old woman wants to start a small tailoring business. She needs Rs. 3 lakh loan. Under which MUDRA category will she apply?

1
Step 1

Identify the loan amount needed = Rs. 3 lakh.

2
Step 2

Check MUDRA categories: — Shishu = up to Rs. 50,000 (too small) — Kishore = Rs. 50,001 to Rs. 5 lakh (Rs. 3 lakh falls HERE) — Tarun = Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh (too large)

3
Step 3

Rs. 3 lakh is between Rs. 50,001 and Rs. 5 lakh. Answer: Kishore category ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— #1 TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Students confuse PMJJBY and PMSBY.

Memory HookRemember this — never confuse the two again

clearly: — PMJJBY = LIFE insurance (JJ = Jeevan = Life). Premium = Rs. 436. Age = 18-50. — PMSBY = ACCIDENT insurance (SB = Suraksha Bima = Safety Insurance). Premium = Rs. 20. Age = 18-70. The age limit is different. PMSBY covers up to age 70. PMJJBY only covers up to age 50. This difference is heavily tested.

Key Points to Remember

  • PMJDY was launched on 28 August 2014 — it is the world's largest financial inclusion scheme with zero balance accounts.
  • PMJDY RuPay card gives accident insurance of Rs. 2 lakh (not Rs. 1 lakh — old limit was Rs. 1 lakh).
  • PMJDY overdraft facility = up to Rs. 10,000 per account holder (revised from Rs. 5,000).
  • SHORTCUT — PMSBY: Rs. 20 premium = Rs. 2 lakh cover (death/full disability), Rs. 1 lakh (partial disability). Age = 18-70 years.
  • SHORTCUT — PMJJBY: Rs. 436 premium = Rs. 2 lakh life cover. Age = 18-50 years. Auto-debited from bank account.
  • SHORTCUT — MUDRA S-K-T rule: Shishu (up to Rs. 50,000), Kishore (Rs. 50,001–5 lakh), Tarun (Rs. 5 lakh–10 lakh).
  • APY is administered by PFRDA. Entry age = 18-40 years. Pension = Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month.
  • Stand-Up India gives loans of Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 1 crore — for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs only.
  • Business Correspondent (BC) model allows banks to serve remote areas through appointed agents — key tool for financial inclusion.
  • Formula — APY minimum contribution period = 60 minus entry age in years (e.g., entry at 35 = 25 years of contribution).

Exam-Specific Tips

  • PMJDY launch date: 28 August 2014 — announced by PM Narendra Modi.
  • PMJDY life cover: Rs. 30,000 for eligible account holders (in addition to accident cover).
  • PMSBY annual premium: Rs. 20 — the lowest premium among all Government insurance schemes.
  • PMJJBY annual premium revised to Rs. 436 per year (effective June 2022, earlier Rs. 330).
  • MUDRA full form: Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Ltd — set up in April 2015.
  • APY regulated by: PFRDA (Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority) — NOT IRDAI or RBI.
  • Stand-Up India: Minimum loan = Rs. 10 lakh, Maximum loan = Rs. 1 crore — at least 1 SC/ST and 1 woman borrower per branch.
  • PMJDY overdraft facility: Rs. 10,000 — available to account holders with satisfactory operation for 6 months.

60-Second Revision — Financial Inclusion & Schemes

  • Remember: PMJDY = 28 Aug 2014, zero balance, RuPay card, Rs. 2 lakh accident cover, Rs. 10,000 overdraft, Rs. 30,000 life cover.
  • Formula: PMSBY = Rs. 20 premium → Rs. 2 lakh cover, age 18-70. PMJJBY = Rs. 436 premium → Rs. 2 lakh cover, age 18-50.
  • Trap: Do NOT confuse PMJJBY (life, age up to 50) with PMSBY (accident, age up to 70). Age limit difference is the most tested trap.
  • Remember MUDRA S-K-T: Shishu (0–50K), Kishore (50K–5L), Tarun (5L–10L). Administered by MUDRA Ltd under PMMY.
  • Remember: APY = PFRDA, age 18-40, pension Rs. 1,000–5,000/month. Stand-Up India = Rs. 10L to Rs. 1Cr for SC/ST and women.
  • Formula: PMSBY cost per day = Rs. 20 ÷ 365 = less than 6 paise. Use this if asked 'cheapest insurance scheme'.
  • Trap: PMJDY accident cover was Rs. 1 lakh earlier — now Rs. 2 lakh for accounts opened after 28 August 2018. Always pick Rs. 2 lakh.
