Mirror & Water Images— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic

MIRROR & WATER IMAGES — COMPLETE GUIDE FOR SSC CGL ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

CORE CONCEPT ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

A mirror image is what you see when you place a mirror next to an object or letter. The image flips — but only in one direction. Which direction it flips depends on where the mirror is placed. A water image is what you see when the object is reflected in water below it. Think of a building reflected in a lake.

The golden rule: Mirror and water images are OPPOSITES in their flip direction. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

KEY RULES / PROPERTIES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

RULE 1 — MIRROR IMAGE (Vertical Mirror — placed on the LEFT or RIGHT side): → Left and Right are SWAPPED. Top and Bottom stay the SAME.

→ The image looks like the object turned around horizontally. RULE 2 — WATER IMAGE (Horizontal Mirror — placed BELOW the object):

→ Top and Bottom are SWAPPED. Left and Right stay the SAME. → The image looks like the object flipped upside down.

RULE 3 — CLOCK MIRROR IMAGE: → In a mirror, clock hands appear to move in the OPPOSITE direction.

→ Formula: Mirror Time = 11 hours 60 minutes MINUS the Original Time. → This is the most tested formula in this topic.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Clock Mirror Image Formula:

Mirror Time = 11:60 minus Original Time

Example: If original time is 04:30

Mirror Time = 11:60 - 04:30 = 07:30

Water Image of Clock:

Water Time = 17:60 minus Original Time

Example: If original time is 04:30

Water Time = 17:60 - 04:30 = 13:30 → shown as 1:30

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs
TRICK 3 — Clock Formula Shortcut

For Mirror: Always subtract from 11:60

Never from 12

This is the trick most students get wrong. For Water: Always subtract from 17:60. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1

A vertical mirror flips LEFT and RIGHT only.

2
Step 2

The entire word reverses its order from right to left.

3
Step 3

Each letter that is NOT symmetric also flips individually. B → mirror = reversed B (opens to left instead of right) R → flips to face left I → stays same (symmetric) N → flips G → flips

4
Step 4

The word order also reverses: GNIRB (but each letter individually flipped too) Final Answer: The word reads right to left with each letter horizontally flipped. In SSC options, pick the image where the whole word is reversed AND letters face the opposite direction. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 — CLOCK TIME ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: A clock shows 08:20. What time will its mirror image show?

1
Step 1

Use the formula — Mirror Time = 11:60 minus Original Time

2
Step 2

11:60 minus 08:20

3
Step 3

Subtract minutes first — 60 minus 20 = 40 minutes

4
Step 4

Subtract hours — 11 minus 08 = 03 hours Final Answer: Mirror image shows 03:40 Verification trick: 08:20 + 03:40 = 12:00. If the two times add up to 12:00, your answer is correct. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— NUMBER 1 TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ STUDENTS SUBTRACT FROM 12:00 INSTEAD OF 11:60. Wrong method: 12:00 minus 08:20 = 3:40 (this seems correct here but FAILS when minutes are not zero) Example: Clock shows 08:45 Wrong: 12:00 minus 08:45 — students get confused with borrowing Correct: 11:60 minus 08:45 = 03:15 Always use 11:60. Never use 12:00. This one mistake costs marks in every exam.

Key Points to Remember

  • Mirror image (vertical mirror) — Left and Right swap; Top and Bottom stay the same.
  • Water image (horizontal mirror) — Top and Bottom swap; Left and Right stay the same.
  • Formula: Mirror Time of clock = 11:60 minus Original Time.
  • Formula: Water Time of clock = 17:60 minus Original Time.
  • Verification trick: Mirror time + Original time must always equal 12:00.
  • Symmetric letters (same mirror image): A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y.
  • Symmetric letters (same water image): B, C, D, E, H, I, K, O, X.
  • In mirror image of a word, the entire word reverses AND each individual letter flips horizontally.
  • In water image of a word, the word stays left to right BUT each letter flips vertically (upside down).
  • Trap: Never subtract clock time from 12:00 — always use 11:60 for mirror and 17:60 for water image.

Exam-Specific Tips

  • Mirror image formula for clocks: 11:60 minus the given time gives the mirror image time.
  • Water image formula for clocks: 17:60 minus the given time gives the water image time.
  • Letters A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y are left-right symmetric — their vertical mirror image is identical to the original.
  • Letters B, C, D, E, H, I, K, O, X are top-bottom symmetric — their water image is identical to the original.
  • The digit 0 and digit 8 look the same in both mirror and water images.
  • A vertical mirror placed on the right or left side creates a mirror image by swapping the left and right sides only.
  • A horizontal mirror placed below the object creates a water image by inverting top and bottom only.
  • If a clock shows 06:00, its mirror image also shows 06:00 — because 11:60 minus 06:00 = 05:60 = 06:00.

60-Second Revision — Mirror & Water Images

  • Remember: Mirror (vertical) = Left-Right swap only. Water (horizontal) = Top-Bottom swap only.
  • Formula: Mirror clock time = 11:60 − Original time. Water clock time = 17:60 − Original time.
  • Trap: NEVER subtract from 12:00 for clock mirror — always use 11:60 or you will get wrong answers when minutes are involved.
  • Quick check: Mirror time + Original time = 12:00. If not, your answer is wrong.
  • Symmetric mirror letters (no change): A H I M O T U V W X Y — memorise this row.
  • Symmetric water letters (no change): B C D E H I K O X — memorise this row.
  • In word problems: Mirror = reverse word order + flip each letter horizontally. Water = keep word order + flip each letter vertically.
