CIRCULAR SEATING ARRANGEMENT — COMPLETE GUIDE FOR SSC CGL --- CORE CONCEPT ---

In a circular arrangement, people sit around a circle (like a round table). Unlike a straight line, there is no fixed starting point. So positions are always relative to each other — not absolute. Think of it this way: If 5 friends sit in a straight line, the 1st seat is fixed. But if they sit around a round table, any seat can be the 'first' seat. That is why circular arrangements work differently.

--- KEY RULES / PROPERTIES --- Rule 1 — FACING DIRECTION MATTERS

• Facing Centre: Left = anti-clockwise direction. Right = clockwise direction. • Facing Outside: Left = clockwise direction. Right = anti-clockwise direction.

This single rule decides everything. Fix this in your mind before solving any question. Rule 2 — TOTAL ARRANGEMENTS

• For a straight line of n people: n! arrangements • For a circular arrangement of n people (facing centre): (n-1)! arrangements

Reason: In a circle, one person is fixed to remove repetition. The rest arrange around them. Rule 3 — NECKLACE / KEYRING ARRANGEMENTS

• When clockwise and anti-clockwise look the same (like a necklace): (n-1)! / 2 arrangements Rule 4 — NEIGHBOURS

• In a circle of n people, each person has exactly 2 immediate neighbours — one to the left, one to the right. ---

Tip: About 60-70% of marks in seating arrangement come from just 2 question types — immediate neighbour and opposite person. --- SHORTCUT / TRICK SECTION --- SHORTCUT 1 — THE ANCHOR METHOD Always fix the person with the MOST clues as your anchor. Place them at the top of your circle (12 o'clock position). Build all other positions around them. This saves 30-40 seconds per question set. SHORTCUT 2 — LEFT-RIGHT FLIP TRICK If the question says 'facing outside', simply swap all left and right clues before solving.

Convert it to a 'facing inside' problem. Now solve normally. SHORTCUT 3 — OPPOSITE SEAT FORMULA In a circle of n people (n is even), the person sitting exactly opposite to someone is always (n/2) positions away — either clockwise or anti-clockwise

P sits 3rd to the right of Q. S sits 2nd to the left of P. T is an immediate neighbour of both Q and R. U sits between S and R. Who is sitting opposite Q?

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE #1 TRAP --- STUDENTS CONFUSE LEFT AND RIGHT WHEN PEOPLE FACE OUTSIDE. When people face the centre, your left and right match the person's left and right. But when people face OUTSIDE (away from centre), their left and right are FLIPPED relative to the diagram. Most students forget to flip and lose all 4-5 questions in the set.

Always check facing direction FIRST before placing anyone.

  • In a circular arrangement, positions are RELATIVE, not fixed — there is no absolute first seat.
  • Formula: Circular arrangements of n people = (n-1)! when all face the centre.

  • Necklace/keychain arrangement formula = (n-1)!/2 because flipping gives the same arrangement.
  • In a circle of 8 people, the person sitting exactly opposite is always 4 seats away (8/2 = 4).
  • In circles with ODD number of people, NO person has an exact diagonally opposite seat — trick used frequently in SSC CGL.
