Payment Systems — UPI, RTGS, NEFT— Rules & Concept
Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic
Key Rules for NEFT
• Minimum amount: No minimum limit
• Maximum amount: No upper limit
• Settlement: Deferred Net Settlement (DNS) — processed in batches
• Charges: RBI has made NEFT FREE for savings account holders (since January 2020)
• Available: 24x7x365
• Operated by: RBI
SYSTEM 2 — RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
RTGS transfers money in REAL TIME, one transaction at a time. It is used for LARGE value transfers. RTGS is also available 24x7x365 (since December 2020)
Key Rules for RTGS
• Minimum amount: Rs. 2 Lakh
• Maximum amount: No upper limit
• Settlement: Real Time Gross Settlement — each transaction settled individually
• Charges: RBI has made RTGS FREE (since 2019)
• Available: 24x7x365
• Operated by: RBI
• RTGS is the ONLY system with a minimum transaction limit
SYSTEM 3 — UPI (Unified Payments Interface)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
UPI allows instant money transfer using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) like a mobile number or UPI ID. It works on the IMPS backbone. UPI is managed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), NOT RBI directly
Key Rules for UPI
• Minimum amount: Re. 1
• Maximum amount: Rs. 1 Lakh per transaction (Rs. 2 Lakh for specific categories like Capital Markets, IPO, Insurance)
• Settlement: Instant (real time)
• Charges: FREE for normal users
• Managed by: NPCI
• Launched: April 2016
• UPI 2.0 launched: 2018

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper
Quick Comparison Table
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Memory HookRemember this — never confuse the two again
formula: R-M-U = Real-Minimum-Unified
• RTGS = Real Time + Minimum Rs. 2 Lakh + RBI
• NEFT = Net (batch) + No minimum + RBI
• UPI = Unified + Max Rs. 1 Lakh + NPCI
Shortcut to remember RTGS minimum: 'R for Rs. 2' — RTGS starts at Rs. 2 Lakh.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs
— What Gets Asked?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1. Which system has a minimum transaction limit? → RTGS (Rs. 2 Lakh)
2. Who manages UPI? → NPCI
3. Which system settles in batches? → NEFT
4.
NEFT charges for savings account? → Zero / Free
5. UPI was launched in which year? → 2016
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ShortcutsUse these to save 30–60 seconds per question
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Trick 1 — 'RTGS = Rich Transfer, Go Safe' → Use RTGS only for large amounts (min Rs. 2 Lakh). It is real time and safe.
Trick 2 — 'NEFT = Nahi Ek Baar, Baar Baar' → NEFT works in multiple batches (not one shot). Think 'batch processing'.
Trick 3 — 'UPI = Under 1 Lakh Instantly' → UPI limit is Rs. 1 Lakh per transaction and it is instant.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1
Amount = Rs. 5 Lakh. This is a LARGE amount.
2
Step 2
He wants it IMMEDIATELY (real time).
3
Step 3
Check systems — NEFT works in batches, NOT instant. UPI max limit is Rs. 1 Lakh, so Rs. 5 Lakh is NOT allowed.
4
Step 4
RTGS allows any amount above Rs. 2 Lakh and settles in REAL TIME.
Answer: RTGS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WORKED EXAMPLE 2
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Question: Priya wants to send Rs. 500 to her friend instantly using her smartphone. Which system is most suitable?
1
Step 1
Amount = Rs. 500. This is a SMALL amount.
2
Step 2
She wants it INSTANTLY via smartphone.
3
Step 3
RTGS requires minimum Rs. 2 Lakh — NOT suitable.
4
Step 4
NEFT works in batches — NOT instant.
5
Step 5
UPI allows minimum Re. 1, maximum Rs. 1 Lakh, and is INSTANT via mobile.
Answer: UPI
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
#1 MOST COMMON TRAP — DO NOT FALL FOR THIS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
TRAP: Many students think NEFT is NOT available on Sundays or holidays. This was TRUE before December 2019. But from December 2019 onwards, NEFT is available 24x7x365. Similarly, RTGS became 24x7 from December 2020. Always use the LATEST rules. Exam setters deliberately use old timing data to trick students. If an option says 'NEFT is not available on Sundays' — that answer is WRONG now.
