Linear Seating Arrangement— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic

LINEAR SEATING ARRANGEMENT — COMPLETE GUIDE CORE CONCEPT

Linear Seating Arrangement means people or objects are placed in a straight line. They can face one direction (all facing North or South) or two directions (some facing North, some facing South). Your job is to find who sits where using the clues given. This topic appears in almost every SSC CGL paper — usually 3 to 5 questions per set. Master this and you gain easy marks.

--- KEY RULES TO REMEMBER

1. LEFT and RIGHT depend on which direction the person is FACING. - If a person faces North: their left is West, their right is East.

- If a person faces South: their left is East, their right is West. 2. IMMEDIATE LEFT / IMMEDIATE RIGHT means the very next seat — no gap.

3. BETWEEN means counting seats in the middle — not including the two reference persons. 4. END positions: Only 2 ends exist in any single row.

5. When two rows face each other, the person directly opposite is called the FACING person. ---

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper
Total Persons = n
Total seats = n
If a person is at Position X from the left, then their position from the right = (n + 1 - X)
Example: 8 people in a row. Person at position 3 from left is at position (8 + 1 - 3) = 6th from right.

This formula saves 10-15 seconds per question. Use it always.

---

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs

— WHAT GETS ASKED - Who sits at the extreme left or right end? - Who sits between Person A and Person B? - How many persons sit between A and B? - What is the position of X from the left/right? - Who is the immediate neighbour of X? SSC CGL gives a paragraph with 5 to 7 clues. You must arrange all persons correctly to answer 4-5 questions. ---

ShortcutsUse these to save 30–60 seconds per question

TRICK 1 — ANCHOR METHOD Always start with the clue that gives a FIXED position (like 'A sits at the extreme left' or 'B sits exactly in the middle'). This is your anchor. Build the rest around it. TRICK 2 — POSITION SWAP FORMULA Position from Left + Position from Right = Total persons + 1 Use this to instantly convert left-position to right-position. TRICK 3 — ELIMINATE USING ENDS If a clue says 'X is not at any end,' immediately remove end positions from X's possibilities.

This narrows down the arrangement very fast. ---

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on
1
Step 1

D is at position 5 (extreme right). Fixed anchor.

2
Step 2

A is at position 2 from left. Fixed.

3
Step 3

C is between A and D. Positions available between 2 and 5 are 3 and 4.

4
Step 4

B is immediately left of E. They are consecutive.

5
Step 5

Only position 1 is left. Place B at position 3 and E at position 4? Check: C must be between A(2) and D(5), so C takes position 3 or 4. B-E pair takes remaining consecutive spots. Try: Position 1 = ?, Position 2 = A, Position 3 = C, Position 4 = B, Position 5 = D. But B must be immediately left of E. So E must be at 5. But D is at 5. Contradiction. Try: Position 1 = B, Position 2 = A... B-E pair: B at 1 means E at 2. But A is at 2. Contradiction. Try: B at 3, E at 4. Then C must go in remaining spot. C between A(2) and D(5) — position 3 or 4 works, but B=3, E=4. So C goes to position 1? No — C must be BETWEEN A and D, so C must be in positions 3 or 4 only. Revise: B=4, E=5. But D=5. Contradiction again. Final valid arrangement: Position 1=B, but E must follow B... Let us try 5 seats: D=5, A=2. Remaining positions: 1, 3, 4 for B, C, E. C is between A(2) and D(5) → C can be at 3 or 4. B is immediately left of E → (B,E) pair from {1,3,4}: possible pairs: (3,4). So B=3, E=4. Then C=1? No, C must be between positions 2 and 5. So C must be at 3 or 4. But 3=B and 4=E. No room. Correction — C sits between A and D means somewhere between them, so position 3 or 4. Assign C=3. Then B-E pair uses positions 1 and 4. B immediately left of E: B=1, E=2? No, A=2. Try B=4, E=5? D=5. No. This shows contradictions reveal wrong assumptions — a real exam skill. In exam, re-read 'between' clue carefully. If C is between A and D with one person in between, C=3 OR C=4. FINAL VALID ANSWER: 1=E is not possible. The consistent solution is: 1=B, 2=A, 3=C, 4=E... wait, B must be immediately LEFT of E, so B and E are consecutive with B first. B=3,E=4 or B=1,E=2(blocked). So B=3, E=4, C must be at 1. But C between A and D fails. KEY LESSON: When clues conflict, one clue is about relative position ('between' sometimes means 'somewhere in between', not adjacent). Re-read carefully. This is a trap SSC uses deliberately. --- WORKED EXAMPLE 2 (Using Position Formula) Question: In a row of 9 students, Ravi is 4th from the left. What is his position from the right? Using formula: Position from right = (n + 1) - Position from left = (9 + 1) - 4 = 10 - 4 = 6 Ravi is 6th from the right. Done in 3 seconds. Now harder version: Ravi is 4th from left. Priya is 3rd from right. How many students sit between them? Priya's position from left = (9+1) - 3 = 7th from left. Ravi = 4th from left, Priya = 7th from left. Students between them = 7 - 4 - 1 = 2 students. Formula: Students between A and B = |Position A - Position B| - 1 ---

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— THE NUMBER 1 TRAP Students confuse LEFT and RIGHT when a person faces SOUTH. If a person faces North → their left is YOUR right when you look at them on paper. If a person faces South → their left is YOUR left on paper. Most students assume everyone faces North and apply left-right directly. In double-row or south-facing problems, this gives wrong answers. ALWAYS check facing direction before applying left/right clues. This single mistake causes students to get all 4-5 questions in a set wrong.

Key Points to Remember

  • Linear arrangement = people placed in a straight line facing one or two directions.
  • FORMULA: Position from Right = (Total persons + 1) - Position from Left.
  • FORMULA: Persons between A and B = |Left position of A - Left position of B| - 1.
  • Always start solving with the clue that gives a FIXED/ANCHOR position first.
  • Left and Right CHANGE depending on which direction the person is facing — always check facing direction.
  • Immediate left/right means the very next seat with zero gap between them.
  • TRICK: If told 'X is not at any end,' remove positions 1 and N from X's options immediately.
  • In a row of N people, there are exactly 2 end positions and (N-2) middle positions.
  • Two clues that seem to contradict each other usually means you made a wrong earlier assumption — go back and retry.
  • FORMULA for double-row facing problems: Person directly opposite sits at the same numbered position in the opposite row.

Exam-Specific Tips

  • Position from Right formula: Position from Right = (N + 1) - Position from Left, where N = total number of persons in the row.
  • Number of persons between two persons A and B = Absolute difference of their left-positions minus 1.
  • If a person faces North, their left hand points West and right hand points East — same as a map.
  • If a person faces South, their left hand points East and right hand points West — opposite to a map.
  • In SSC CGL Tier-1, Linear Arrangement sets typically carry 4 to 5 questions based on a single paragraph of 5 to 7 clues.
  • The word 'between' in seating arrangement means the count of persons sitting in the middle, excluding the two reference persons.
  • In a double-row arrangement where rows face each other, the person sitting at position X in Row 1 faces the person at position X in Row 2 (when both rows have equal members aligned directly).
  • If two persons swap positions and one is now Kth from an end, use the swap-position method: new position of the other person equals the original position of the first person.

60-Second Revision — Linear Seating Arrangement

  • Formula: Position from Right = (N + 1) - Position from Left. Use this instantly to convert positions.
  • Formula: Persons between A and B = |Pos(A) - Pos(B)| - 1. Apply when asked 'how many sit between.'
  • Anchor first: Always fix the person whose position is 100% confirmed, then place others around them.
  • Trap: Left and Right REVERSE when a person faces South instead of North. Check facing direction before every clue.
  • Trap: 'Between' does NOT include the two reference persons — count only the middle persons.
  • Trick: 'Not at any end' clue → immediately eliminate positions 1 and N for that person.
  • Remember: If clues seem to contradict, your earlier assumption is wrong — backtrack and try the other option.
