Schemes & Initiatives— Rules & Concept

Core ConceptRead this first — the foundation of the topic
SSC CGL regularly asks

Who launched it? What is its purpose? Which ministry runs it

Think of each scheme as having 4 fixed tags

NAME of the scheme 2. LAUNCH YEAR 3. TARGET BENEFICIARY (who it helps) 4. NODAL MINISTRY (which ministry runs it) Memorize these 4 tags for every major scheme.

That alone covers 80% of exam questions. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ KEY RULES / PROPERTIES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Rule 1 — Central vs State: If the scheme is funded 100% by Centre, it is a Central Sector Scheme. If Centre and State share cost (usually 60:40 or 90:10), it is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme

Rule 2 — PM prefix schemes

Most schemes launched after 2014 carry the 'PM' or 'Pradhan Mantri' prefix. This itself is a trick question — examiners swap launch years

Rule 3 — Renamed Schemes

Many old schemes were renamed after 2014

Example

Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana was renamed Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) in 2015. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Formula BlockMemorise — at least one formula appears in every paper

(SHORTCUT TAGS)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Shortcut Formula: Every scheme answer = NAME + YEAR + WHO + MINISTRY
Funding Pattern Formula: Central Sector = 100% Centre | Centrally Sponsored = 60:40 (Centre:State) for general states | 90:10 for Northeast/hilly states
Age Trick Formula: If scheme targets children under 6 years → think ICDS / Poshan Abhiyan. If it targets 14-18 years → think Samagra Shiksha or Skill India.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam PatternsWhat examiners ask — read before attempting PYQs

— WHAT GETS ASKED ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Pattern 1: 'Which scheme provides free LPG connections to BPL families?' → PM Ujjwala Yojana (2016) Pattern 2: 'Which ministry runs PM Fasal Bima Yojana?' → Ministry of Agriculture Pattern 3: 'What is the full form of PMJDY?' → Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana Pattern 4: Year-swap trap — they give correct scheme name but wrong year. PMJDY was launched on 28 August 2014, NOT 2015. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

ShortcutsUse these to save 30–60 seconds per question
Trick 2 — YEAR GROUPING

Most 2015 schemes = Skill India, PMAY, AMRUT, Smart Cities. Most 2016 schemes = Ujjwala, PMFBY, Stand Up India. Group by year to reduce confusion

Trick 3 — BENEFICIARY SHORTCUT

If question says 'women Self Help Groups' → think DAY-NRLM. If it says 'street vendors' → think PM SVANidhi (2020). ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Worked ExampleSolve this step-by-step before moving on

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: PM Ujjwala Yojana was launched in which year and by which ministry? Step 1 — Recall the 4 tags: Name = PM Ujjwala Yojana Step 2 — Year: 2016 (launched 1 May 2016, Ballia, UP) Step 3 — Beneficiary: BPL women (free LPG connection) Step 4 — Ministry: Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Answer: 2016 | Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Trap avoided: Students often say Ministry of Women and Child Development — WRONG. LPG = Petroleum Ministry. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WORKED EXAMPLE 2 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Question: What is the insurance cover under PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)? Step 1 — Identify scheme type: Life insurance scheme for ages 18-50 Step 2 — Recall key number: Cover = Rs. 2 lakh on death Step 3 — Premium: Rs. 436 per year (revised; originally Rs. 330) Step 4 — Ministry: Ministry of Finance Answer: Rs. 2 lakh life cover | Ministry of Finance Do NOT confuse with PMSBY (Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana) which is ACCIDENT insurance, also Rs. 2 lakh, premium only Rs. 20/year. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Exam TrapsCommon mistakes students make — avoid these

— #1 TRAP ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Students confuse PMJJBY (life insurance) with PMSBY (accident insurance). Both give Rs. 2 lakh cover. The difference: PMJJBY = any death, premium Rs. 436/year.

PMSBY = accidental death only, premium Rs. 20/year. Examiners love this swap. Always check the word LIFE vs ACCIDENT in the question.

Key Points to Remember

  • Every scheme has 4 tags to memorize: Name, Launch Year, Beneficiary, and Nodal Ministry.
  • Central Sector Scheme = 100% funded by Centre; Centrally Sponsored Scheme = 60:40 (Centre:State) funding ratio.
  • For Northeast and hilly states, the Centre-State funding ratio is 90:10 in Centrally Sponsored Schemes.

  • PM Ujjwala Yojana launched on 1 May 2016 — free LPG to BPL women — Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
  • Shortcut: PMJJBY = Life insurance, Rs. 2 lakh cover, Rs. 436/year premium | PMSBY = Accident insurance, Rs. 2 lakh cover, Rs. 20/year premium.
  • Skill India Mission, PMAY, AMRUT, and Smart Cities Mission were all launched in 2015 — group them together.
  • PM SVANidhi Scheme (2020) provides micro-loans to street vendors — Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
  • DAY-NRLM (Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana - NRLM) targets women Self Help Groups for rural livelihood.
  • Renamed scheme trick: Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana was renamed DDUGJY (Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana) in 2015.
