CIRCULAR SEATING ARRANGEMENT — COMPLETE GUIDE FOR SSC CGL --- CORE CONCEPT ---
In a circular arrangement, people sit around a circle (like a round table). Unlike a straight line, there is no fixed starting point. So positions are always relative to each other — not absolute. Think of it this way: If 5 friends sit in a straight line, the 1st seat is fixed. But if they sit around a round table, any seat can be the 'first' seat. That is why circular arrangements work differently.
--- KEY RULES / PROPERTIES --- Rule 1 — FACING DIRECTION MATTERS
• Facing Centre: Left = anti-clockwise direction. Right = clockwise direction. • Facing Outside: Left = clockwise direction. Right = anti-clockwise direction.
This single rule decides everything. Fix this in your mind before solving any question. Rule 2 — TOTAL ARRANGEMENTS
• For a straight line of n people: n! arrangements • For a circular arrangement of n people (facing centre): (n-1)! arrangements
Reason: In a circle, one person is fixed to remove repetition. The rest arrange around them. Rule 3 — NECKLACE / KEYRING ARRANGEMENTS
• When clockwise and anti-clockwise look the same (like a necklace): (n-1)! / 2 arrangements Rule 4 — NEIGHBOURS
• In a circle of n people, each person has exactly 2 immediate neighbours — one to the left, one to the right. ---
--
Circular arrangement (facing centre): (n-1)!
Necklace / keychain type: (n-1)! divided by 2
Total neighbours of any one person: Always 2
Person sitting exactly opposite in even-n circle: (n/2) seats away
---
Who sits to the immediate left/right of Person X? 2. Who sits exactly opposite to Person X? 3. How many people sit between Person A and Person B? 4. Which of the following pairs sit adjacent to each other? 5.
What is the position of Person X with respect to Person Y? Tip: About 60-70% of marks in seating arrangement come from just 2 question types — immediate neighbour and opposite person. --- SHORTCUT / TRICK SECTION --- SHORTCUT 1 — THE ANCHOR METHOD Always fix the person with the MOST clues as your anchor. Place them at the top of your circle (12 o'clock position). Build all other positions around them. This saves 30-40 seconds per question set. SHORTCUT 2 — LEFT-RIGHT FLIP TRICK If the question says 'facing outside', simply swap all left and right clues before solving.
Convert it to a 'facing inside' problem. Now solve normally. SHORTCUT 3 — OPPOSITE SEAT FORMULA In a circle of n people (n is even), the person sitting exactly opposite to someone is always (n/2) positions away — either clockwise or anti-clockwise
In a circle of 8, the person sitting opposite is always 4 seats away. ---
Fix A at 12 o'clock position.
B is to the right of A (clockwise) → place B at 2 o'clock.
D is opposite B (5 people, so 2-3 seats away) → D is at 8 o'clock (across from B... wait, 5 people means no exact opposite, but let us re-read). For 5 people, 'opposite' sometimes means 2 seats away. Place D two seats anti-clockwise from B → D at 10 o'clock.
E is to the right of D (clockwise) → E at 12 o'clock? No, A is there. Try D at 8 o'clock. E to right of D → E at 10 o'clock.
C is to the left of E (anti-clockwise from E) → C at 8 o'clock.
Check remaining seat for A, B, C, D, E around circle: A(12), B(2-3 o'clock area), then fill D, E, C in remaining seats. Final Circle (clockwise): A → B → E → D → C → back to A. Immediate left of C (anti-clockwise from C) = A. Answer: A sits to the immediate left of C. --- WORKED EXAMPLE 2 --- Problem: 6 people P, Q, R, S, T, U sit in a circle facing the centre. P sits 3rd to the right of Q. S sits 2nd to the left of P. T is an immediate neighbour of both Q and R. U sits between S and R. Who is sitting opposite Q?
Fix Q at top (12 o'clock). Label positions 1-6 clockwise.
P is 3rd to the right of Q → P is at position 4 (clockwise: Q=1, skip 2,3, land on 4).
S is 2nd to the left of P. Left = anti-clockwise. From P(4), 2 anti-clockwise = position 2. So S = position 2.
T is immediate neighbour of both Q(1) and R. Q's neighbours are positions 2(S) and 6. So T = position 6. R must be neighbour of T too → R = position 5.
U is between S(2) and R(5). Remaining seat = position 3. U = position 3. Final circle (clockwise): Q(1), S(2), U(3), P(4), R(5), T(6). Opposite Q (position 1) = position 4 = P. Answer: P sits opposite Q. ---
— THE #1 TRAP --- STUDENTS CONFUSE LEFT AND RIGHT WHEN PEOPLE FACE OUTSIDE. When people face the centre, your left and right match the person's left and right. But when people face OUTSIDE (away from centre), their left and right are FLIPPED relative to the diagram. Most students forget to flip and lose all 4-5 questions in the set.
Always check facing direction FIRST before placing anyone.
